Marc
Brocot lives in the picturesque village of Marsannay, just south of
Dijon. He cultivates 5 hectares of vines in Marsannay and in Gevrey. Up
to 1988, he sold his wines in bulk to negociants, but is now domaine
bottling his entire production. His top wine, the Marsannay Rouge Les Echezots
is made from 45 year old vines and is matured in one third new oak. It
is quite simply the best value in the Cotes de Nuits, packed with dark
fruit and notes of terroir. Robert Parker describes the wine as “rather
amazing...(it) should be highly sought after by those buyers of
Burgundy who are looking for a great value. It is a very full bodied,
robust, rich wine.... Brocot makes some of the best Marsannay that one
will ever taste.” Matt Kramer agrees, noting that “one of the best
producers (in Marsannay) at the moment is Domaine Marc Brocot.” The Marsannay "Les Echezots"
offers complex Pinot Noir flavors and dark fruits and sous-bois notes.
It represents exceptional value from the Cotes de Nuits. He also
produces an exceptionally fruity and complex Marsannay Rose, a rich Marsannay Blanc, and a rarely seen, fascinating Bourgogne Blanc Pinot Beurot (Pinot Gris). This is a domaine well worth discovering for its serious wines and fine values.
Brocot’s Marsannay Rose
of 100% Pinot Noir, is made by separating the grape skins from the
juice after less than a day of fermentation, just after pressing. After
pressing and removal of the skins, the fermentation proceeds as with a
white wine. The Rose color is obtained from this very short contact
with the skins. By not permitting any maceration (for extraction of
more color and tannis) Marsannay Rose retains the pure perfumed,
strawberry essence of Pinot Noir. Rose is a traditional specialty of
Marsannay, originating in 1919. It was one of the three Marsannay wines
recognized with appellation controlee status in 1987 (red and white
Marsannay are the others.) It is the only Rose in a Burgundy with a
village appellation, and is a unique expression of Pinot Noir from
Cotes de Nuit terroir. Marsannay Rose is delicious with cold fish and
charcuterie, or as an apperatif.
